July Book Haul

July has been one hell of a book for me book wise. It's the month where I read a decent amount for the first time in years since previously I've been working and too busy. I decided that this year would probably be the only chance I got at having an actual summer off so I've definitely made the most of it. I have been focusing a lot on my bookstagram (@kcbookshelf), taking plenty of photos of my shelves and all the books I own. I have also ended up obtaining quite a few and since it's in the end of the month, it is about time I do a little book haul, especially since I haven't exactly spent that much! (In no particular order - mainly because I forgot what order I bought them in!)

FICTION BOOKS

Don Quixote - Cervantes
Price - £2
Where from - The Shakespeare Hospice Bookshop, Stratford-Upon-Avon

I am hoping to continue my degree on to masters and possibly PhD specialising in Early Modern Latin American theatre and the influences from Spanish Golden Age theatre. Throughout all my current research and reading it is obvious that many writers were influences by Cervantes, and in particular Don Quixote. I didn't have it already so when browsing this lovely bookshop in Stratford-Upon-Avon, I got it! The Shakespeare Hospice Bookshop was so lovely. It was nice to see a bookshop that sells plays of all kinds of playwrights, and there were a number of critical literature books too. Perfect for a drama student! There was also a little tea room in the back. I wish I could have stayed for longer!

The First Horseman - D.K. Wilson
Price - £1
Where from - Charity book stall at my local doctors

I bough this purely and simply because I was looking to buy and read some books that are different to what I already have and when I was trying to find another book I'd seen at the stall this one caught my eye. Since it was only £1, I bought it! By the looks of things it's a crime set sure the Tudor time. I do love anything set around that time (hence my hopeful masters degree).

The Darkness Around Her - Neil White
Price - Free (in return for a review)
Where from - Readers First

If you're interesting in reviewing books and getting free books then definitely check out Readers First (only UK residents can receive books)! I found the site just over a week ago and have been obsessed ever since. You can get point from writing reviews and first impressions of new books, then every week there is a draw for one of the books that is due to release. I won The Darkness Around Her last week and it arrived on Friday so it is next on my tbr! Look out for a review sometime between now and the 9th August!

One Day - David Nicholls
Price - £1.25
Where from - Trinity Hospice charity shop, Lytham

I bought Starter for 10 a while ago so I was excited to start a mini David Nicholls collection and when I saw One Day in the charity shop, I couldn't not buy it!

The Other Queen - Philippa Gregory
Price - £1
Where from - Charity book stall at my local doctors

I had been wanting to buy some Philippa Gregory books for a long time but didn't know were to start. So when I saw this I thought I might as well start buying them when I see them! Only to find out that this is one of the last ones in one of the Tudor Court series. Typical. Better start looking out for the others now!

Legend (series) - Marie Lu
Price - 3 for £3
Where from - Trinity Hospice charity shop, Lytham

I've known about these book for ages and since I've heard such good things I've been really wanting to read them but of course I didn't have them until now. I was amazed at how perfect the condition of this set was, and that I was able to buy them all together. Summer TBR is ever growing!

Three Great Novels by The Brontes
Price - 25p
Where from - Car boot stall, Blackpool

I was actually looking for some old looking books to use as props for bookstagram and this was 20p so my mum bought it for me! I haven't read much classical literature but I really need to!

The Understudy - David Nicholls
Price - £1.20
Where from - Cancer Research charity shop, Chorley

More of a recent buy (literally yesterday) and technically it was a gift (as payment for petrol from my boyfriend as I gave him a lift home). Again, I was adding to my David Nicholls collection! I love the covers of these!

The Spy of Venice - Benet Brandreth
Price - £1.30
Where from - Cancer Research Charity Shop, Chorley

Whilst browsing the books on Readers First I spotted one that looked quite interesting and went on BorrowBox to see if there was an audiobook I could listen to. There was amazingly! Then I realised it was the second one in the series so I was on the search for this one. I love anything to do with Shakespeare (bloody drama student that I am) so fiction or not, I was obviously going to pick this book up. I believe its crime and mystery mixed with typical Shakespearean love and tragedy. I hope so anyway, look forward to it!

Labyrinth - Kate Mosse
Price - 99p
Where from - Charity shop, Chorley

Impulse buy not going to lie. Again, it was technically a gift from my boyfriend in return for driving him back home. I've been wanting to read a lot more crime and mystery lately and since this was one of the best selling books around the same time as The Da Vinci Code then it can only be good right?! I'm intrigued by the locations and time periods in this book. Once I've read it I'll probably be wanting to watch the TV series so we'll see!

The Inca Prophecy - Adrian d'Hage
Price - Free
Where from - Boyfriend gifted it from a bunch of books his family were sending to the charity shop.

I may have very subtly begged for this book considering the series is about areas of ancient history that I have the most interest in. It is a later book in the series but I don't mind being on the look out for them, especially since one is about Mexico and the Mayans!

NON-FICTION BOOKS

Alan Turing: The Enigma - Andrew Hodges
Price - £1
Where from - Charity book stall at my local doctors

I am yet to see The Imitation Game but find everything about it so interesting, so to be able to read the book that explains the truths behind it is fascinating! I've heard there's a lot of talk about the maths and physics behind it all which is actually something I love but since I'm a drama student, I don't get to do so much. Definitely excited about this one!

English Renaissance Drama - A.R Braunmuller & Michael Hattaway (eds)
Price - £2.50
Where from - The Shakespeare Hospice charity book shop, Stratford-Upon-Avon

I feel like this one speaks for itself, being a drama student and all (how may times have I mentioned that in this post?!). I use these Cambridge Companions quite a lot in my studies and I can guarantee that this book, and the articles within it, will get used quite a few time throughout the next couple of years. I was amazed at the price. It is in brilliant condition and usually they cost a fortune. To buy new on Amazon it is £25.99 so I definitely got a bargain there! It was technically also a gift from my parents when we went to Stratford-Upon-Avon.

TOTAL AMOUNT SPENT ON BOOKS: £15.49
(Not counting that some were gifts)

NUMBER OF BOOK GAINED: 15

An average of £1.03 per book - I think that's pretty damn good!

Just goes to show that you really can get plenty of books cheaply enough... and thank goodness because I always want to keep buying them and my bank account can't handle it!

I think I need to give myself a book buying ban for August so I can stop adding to my TBR list. I officially have no more shelves to fill either so that's probably the next thing I need to look at. I definitely have plenty to read!

Look out for a July round up post and plenty more reviews coming your way!

Until then...
